How to Avoid Hydroplaning

Momentarily losing control of your vehicle when you’re driving on wet surfaces is one of the scariest situations you can encounter. As water rushes in between your vehicle’s tires and the pavement, it takes control of directing their movements. The wheels can’t gain the traction they need to move through it. There are precautions you can take to help steer clear of that situation again.

The first is to maintain the tires themselves. Keep the air pressure at the recommended weight. Check it monthly along with a visual inspection of the tires’ wear and tread. A regular schedule of rotating and balancing your tires also helps ensure that they wear evenly.

After you’ve taken care of your tires, simply slow down a little while driving on wet pavement. With such busy schedules, it may seem like you’re giving up precious time with a 5 to 10 mph slower rate. You’re just taking measures to arrive at your destination safely.
